What are the major waypoints for a species? What are the fundamental 'breakthroughs' or developmental portals that must be passed in order to ascend? Where are humans?

    I think a few would be -
    - common communication, be it spoken or gestured or etc..
    - a method to pass information indirectly such as writing
    - the expansion beyond a home range
    - etc...

... to the next waypoint. Not a metaphysical reference...

I still don't know what you mean by a waypoint.

species mutate and adapt - they don't ascend

I didn't realize that I was being so cryptic in my choice of words. Are you really not understanding or are you being contentious? Both?
To explain further, remember the saying about crawling before you walk? Crawling and walking would be the 'waypoints' that would build one on another. Maybe running would come next?
Think of 'ascending' as sliding to the right on the familar graphic of the development of homo erectus.

you seem to have a wrong image of how species evolve
there is no direction or guidance "towards" a certain goal
in hindsight it may appear that H.erectus was meant to evolve into H.sapiens, but at the time of H.erectus that would not have appeared like a foregone conclusion

in short, the perception of progress is just that : a perception
