Hello. Lately I have been hearing something suspicious next door. In the middle of the night people are trying to keep me awake and drive me insane! I do not know the people over there very well but they do seem to be strange and mean. I figure I can just purchase a digital voice recorder to catch them doing it. Can you help me to find the right tools to do this. Could you also kindly inform me on how to go to the police with what I record to have these people arrested and hopefully evicted. Thank you science forum.

mmate; You should be able to lodge a complaint of sorts, with your local authorities. THEY will then set up a recording system or what ever needed. If you prefer having the evidence first (best bet), and you indicate clearly hearing the "whatever", any recording devise should work. From the legal standpoint, you need to be careful in making an accusation "driving you insane" or purposely harassing you for any purpose. You feel they may be mean or strange, but they may be doing something quite ordinary, just with bad timing. I'd be curious to what brought you to that possible conclusion.

Same opinion here, I recommend also what Jackson recommends. Send a polite notice first to the neghbours in the form of a letter. Make a copy of the letter and photograph it several times, video record yourself putting the letter in the envelope and then posting it to the neighbour. Then if and when it goes to a higher authority you have evidence you were mutual at first.

    Good luck.

Can you be more specific. I have had people describe any time after 8.00 pm as 'the middle of the night'. I would consider the middle of the night to be between midnight and 4.00 am. What about you?

What make syou believe their actions are intended to keep you awake? That may be a consequence of their actions, but it may not be their intent.
Equally, do you have any real evidence that their intention is to 'drive you insane' or is that just hyperbole. If it is the latter I suggest you remove such subjective remarks from any correspondence with them or the authorities.

So why don't you invite them over for a couple of beers and a hamburger to get to know them. Then, if it seems appropriate mention that you've been kept awake on occassion by their activities.

You're sure its not just the case that at night, ambient noise of the day (traffic, etc) is just quieter and they're just nightowls who are up going about their "day?"

I used to have a job that got me home just before midnight... I was ready to watch a little TV and talk to whomever was also up at that time for a few hours before heading off to bed. That definitely qualifies as the "middle of the night."

Beers and burgers is a good way to get to know the neighbors.... just throw them on the grill and knock on their door...

That would be considerably cheaper than my own suggestion. Id say follow ophiolite on this one before risking being branded as the "Paranoid psychotic stalker neighbor"

Thanks everyone, I have been sleeping fine lately. I have just been shutting up my room, putting some low music on, and taking a sleeping pill. I am planning on buying a video camcorder so I can record my room to hear just what is going on so I can get help with it. I honestly could be just imaging things though, but I am fine and certain I am sane, outside of being at little sleepy for a day or two when it was going on.
I will probably start talking to them more apart from just saying hello. The lady next door does seem kind of mean and unfriendly and she rents the place to a few iffy looking people. Maybe I am just too reclusive or quiet looking to them or something. I dunno. I just hope they do not dislike me so much out of it that they have decided that they will just mess with me for the sake of messing with me or something.
