    Hi guys,

I'm thinking of writing a piece on what It means to be a scientist and why we do it. I have my own theories but am interested in your thoughts.

For myself, the main things that motivate me are the drive to learn (obviously) as well as the hope of discovering something of value to share with society. In short, I belive science is more of a pro-social area than self-centred (although that said, many scientists I've met seem more interested in their own fame and glory). Moreover, I believe that teaching what you know is just as much a part of being a scientist as learning yourself.

Another note, I find that being a scientist doesn't just mean doing science. As a scientist I believe I think differently and approach the world in a different way to others. That is, thinking like a scientist goes beyond thinking about science but to approach all apsects of life in a very pragmatic and analytical manner, to base decisions and perceptions of past experiences and knowledge rather than 'intuition' or 'feelings' as other more romantic members of society might. Not to say it is a superior way of thinking; it has many draw backs, being slow to make pressing decisions being one of them.

Sorry if this has allready been posted somewhere, I had a quick look but couldn't dig up anything.

    Cheers

I agree with you that a scientist doesn't necessarily have to work in the sciences. I think being a scientist has more to do with your thought process and approach to problem solving than the work you do. It's about using the scientific method, the general idea of observation and experimentation, in one's professional and personal life.
