    Greetings,

Brand new here -- great site. I want to major in the hard sciences--- either Math or Computer Science. One thing that keeps bugging me is the perception that scientists don't like sports. I do want to fit in with my fellow collegues and classmates...but I've never been interested in WoW or Dungeons and Dragons for example. Instead I watched and played (with friends) sports. I have a huge passion for all of science...But the perception is science people do not like sports. I'm not saying we all have to like the same thing but I would feel better if some of you would just reassure me that there are a few scientists that do like sports (whether in school or at work)

    Thanks so much!

Don't worry so much about 'fitting in'. As long as you pursue what you have a passion for you'll be fine, try not to catagorize people that way, it only limits what you think of yourself and others. You can be a scientist and like sports. I'm studying mathematics and I'm a passionate Archer, Fencer, and Kendo practitioner. I've touched Tai Chi, and a few other martial arts, as well as fired a rifle (once). It's a matter of doing what you love and not caring so much what people think of you. Don't worry too much about any kind of label you get from others and try not to give them in kind.

I have to admit it's a little saddening to see that you share the stereotypical view that scientists are all antisocial nerds that spend their free time at home playing WoW. Many scientists are by most accounts very normal people. At our last department party half the people were talking about the U of M v Notre Dame game. And if I humbly say so we give pretty good department parties too.
Man can will nothing unless he has first understood that he must count on no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth.

One groupleader insists on the group going out and do sports activities together.

i will tell him that he is a bad scientist.
