I recently watched a short news report about a study in a chinese university where they tried to find out whether men are more vain than women. The researchers made appointments with their subjects to be interviewed and each has to wait in a waiting room before being interviewed. In each room there is a one way mirror where researchers can video tape the subject's action without being seen. In that study, men looked at themselves in the mirror more than the women.

Could men be more vain than women?

Maybe men just like shiny objects, like mirrors, more than women do?

Maybe men need to constantly look in the mirror to boost what little egos they have in the first place. Insecurity is a real PIA.

How do you account for them constantly doing things that make them look stupid in public, just for the hell of it? Or is that just me? :?

Wasting time on something is not the same as having mastered it.

I'd suggest the women spent less time checking themselves in the last-minute mirror because they had already gone over themselves and also knew - through vigilant care and experience - that their appearence was since unmarred.

    Similar generalization:

Superficially it appears women like to shop, and they must be good at it. Because women spend so much time shopping, right? Wrong. Women spend a lot of time shopping because they're relatively inept shoppers. They go into stores without a clear plan. They don't know where everything is. They're unsure of fair prices or alternative products. So female shoppers wander around, overwhelmed. Contrast men, whom (gross generalization) march into a store with a mental list, and connect the dots on that list - they've already mapped - also noting new items and prices as they go, so next trip will be even more efficient. Shopping's a game men stay on top of, while women get mired in it.

Of course the study doesn't proof that men are more vain than women. It merely points out that men look at themselves in the mirror more than women.Well in this case young chinese men.

Men are more observant; women don't notice the mirror.

Women are more observant; they see more important things around than the mirror.

    however you like

Could we be like Peacocks? The male peacock has to display his colorful array of feathers to the female peacock to attract mating partners.

I'd say that we are like peacocks, except that I would say both men and women do this. Women probably put more effort into this than men, but I wouldn't say they do it more necessarily.

The world knows that women are vainer than men. There is no second answer.

In that study, I can surely say that women in that room had seen themselves a thousand times in the mirror before leaving home. Suppose, if the appointment was at 10:00 am, women may have started to makeup themselves at 6:00 in the morning, but poor men who even had forgot to see their faces in the mirror while leaving home, made use of the mirror in the waiting room.

it is pretty obvious that lots of women are vainer than men

but in some cases, the numbers of men who are vain is starting to increase
and there's this group on the society which is so called "Metrosexual" men are pretty much vainer on a normal vain men.

This thread suffers pretty badly from confirmation bias and also population/sampling bias.

Maybe society wants women to take more care in their appearance than men?

I certainly know a lot of exceptions to this ruel you've just speculated.

    there are many possibilities

the room should have been filled with many distractions, to make sure the men weren't just getting bored

Please define vanity, because I'm pretty sure a lot of things are percievably vane, that are not necissarily done out of vane.

Mmhmm, gender performitivity, women are expected to be more vain in our current culture. However, historically the quality of primping and obsessing over personal appearance was often associated with the male gender. It probably stems from a Judeo-Christian patriarchal bias towards women as the seductress and corrupter.

Women still are disproportionately rewarded for selling themselves physically. Both genders contribute to the cycle.

    "And" not "but".

The earning gap is not so great anymore to excuse any woman getting through life as just a pretty face and economically dependent on men. I still see young women who had every opportunity, whose primary goal is to hitch a breadwinner. I guess they're outside the mainstream now.

That dating older rich guys remains a career, suggests girls' self-worth and independence needs work. For my part, I insist that cuteness does not amount to worth, and freedom to choose between males does not amount to independence.

Are you suggesting that men don't use women and/or that wealthy men are incapable of resisting a woman's suduction?

We all have our niches, some are less contested than others. Implying that something about human interactions is wrong, is wrong(I don't mean that, I'm being silly). You just don't like something about that behavior, that doesn't make it wrong, simply having what you call "opertunity" doesn't mean that you are a doing something wrong if you don't take it.

The causes of human choices is slightly more complex than, "they could have done this, but they didn't, which means they are dumb/lazy/foolish/selfish," or any other over simplification that you may concider to be acceptable. The bottom line is that everyone can do a lot of different things, we all have opertunities, and we all take advantage of everything we concider worth while: just like you taking advantage of the willingness of others to listen to what you have to say, by trying to convince others that certain bahavior in women is unacceptable.

I'm curious: Have you had bad experiences with gold diggers? or are you jealous that you probably will never have experiences quite so bad as the one's you dream of?

You're trying to pick an argument with a feminist.

"Suggesting..." no, let's not suggest positions to each other.

"Niches..." I can't accept that much better than allowing Blacks to find niches by "choice". Perhaps my calling it inexcusable throws you. I am not saying "oh, they suck." I'm saying "we suck." We can do better. So in the case of gender equality there are particular things men can do and also things women can do. Being nice to women isn't enough. And women choosing paths of least resistance is not enough. I believe that some roles should be retired.

My experience is skewed by my wife's Japanese girlfriends. I think that nation's got some catching up to do.

I'm not singling anyone out here, we are living creatures each competing for limited resources. We all have our own strategies for aquiring resources, some just have better camoflage than others.

It's not just a matter of whether or not "we can do better" but a matter of what influences cause such behavior, and what influences will change it. We can do anything, give us long enough and we might even be able to grow wings.

There are some who will have better mating success if they compete with those who want to cooperate, simply because of the psychological atraction that competition has. Our species descends from a species that split into two distinct blood lines, the other line became Chimps.

Ultimately, the best theory on what seperated the species into two was that the bigger and stronger males outcompeted the weaker males, and were able to take the women who they desired the most. The weaker males, and the women who were not desired, didn't sit around and feel sorry for themselves and ask the other apes to be nicer and treat them fairly (maybe they did, but in hindsight those who didn't, seem to have been more successful). No, instead of trying to change the other's, they mated amongst themselves, and eventually were capable of surviving on their own, so they distanced themselves completely, tick tock goes the clock, a few songs about birds and bees, and here we are.

I don't have any problems with cultural diversity. America(ns) seem to think that we know best, but I have my doubts.

Provide some evidence that we are better off than countries with less gender equality, because of gender equality.
