Light passes through our eyes and hits on the retina. Photo cells in the retina releases electro chemical signals which are sent to the brain and behold! a picture is created from the electrochemical signals which are pieced together by the brain into a picture.

This really fascinates me sometimes. We're in actual fact watching a reality movie, so high is the resolution and quality of this movie (btw it even has 3D!) that we think we're living in it!

Does this fact teases your mind as it does mine?

Another thing I find interesting is magnetism. How can 2 north poles repel each other without physical contact? We can't see the magnetic field or force that acts in between the 2 poles.

The picture quality isn't perfect, so one meets opportunities to suspend belief. You can glance quickly at a fast moving object, to freeze it just like a photograph. You can see the shimmer of individual rods and cones firing (like TV snow) by looking into clear sky or blank wall.

Neither is the picture so thorough as it may seem. For example I may think I see a full spread of rug and all the rug's texture, but in truth I'm impatient and have only skirted the rug just enough to establish its geometrically inevitable outline (rectangular), and lifted just enough pattern to repeat that pattern all over my vision of the rug.

As one ages this knowing-not-seeing grows overactive, and one begins to stumble. One sees the left tap marked "H" though the plumber goofed and used "C" for both. I look again and realize I'm too good at this.

I guess that, taken to extreme, our geriatric vision must become as abstract and expedient as the pirate's treasure map: six paces to the bent tree, left of the boulder, and so forth. Not really seeing anything but architypes of just what is relevent to us. I mean not consciously seeing.

So the "pictures" we have in mind are not really much like movie screens; more like recipies with listed ingredients and directions on how to assemble them. That's virtual alright.
