We have that handy live chat up at the top of the page, but no one ever uses it.
I'd like to advertise that I am on right now (paralith is too), and I'd like more people to use the chat.
Maybe this thread could be used to advertise that you're on the chat when no one else is on.

i can't get it to work for some reason
I use the chat from time to time, I have to say it's always just been me sitting waiting for anyone to show up. I'll see if there is some newer software available to help fix any issues people might be having. It's Java based, so if you don't have Java it will not work. www.java.com (Sun's website).
Like I mentioned in another thread, I'll start hanging out there more regularly.

I've got the same problem as icu.
For those having problems, what browser are you using and how far does the chat get before it has some issue? Does it give some kind of error message ?

Would it be possible to displaythe number of people logged onto the chat next to the chat button? I think if people can see that there is some activity that they would log on much more often and it would become more used than it currently is.

There's some sort of bug in my javascript, that won't let it run. I can't be bothered to try and fix it, because I don't know where the problem is.
You could try downloading mIRC and connecting that way.

OK, I know it seems like every time you log on and I'm there that I'm ignoring you. I'm not, I promise. I'm multitasking, give it a little while and I'll notice you're there. Most of the time.

I think what we need is a little number next to the chat that says how many people are in the channel.
That's why I said most of the time....not all of the time. =p
People don't even notice red lights, you think they'll notice a little number

Would it be easier to have a click counter that was set to only keep track of the clicks within the last hour or three?
You read my mind. Yes, I would make an entry to a database table with a timestamp. Viewing the page would give a total of entries that are within a certain time frame. Clicking would also clean up old stale entries. I could do this all with code as well, databases are just so much more fun.
The only problem is for those of us who don't enter the chat room by clicking that link. I just go through my IRC program because I don't like the java client.
In that case we would need a program that could log in to IRC on a specific channel and count the number of users. It would also have to be pretty non intrusive to those who run the IRC (Freenode).

Yes you can, Steve.
First type: /server irc.freenode.net
This will get connect you to the server. Once you're all connected up type: /join #thescienceforum
And that will take you to this forum's chat room.
These instructions follow for anyone using an IRC program instead of the java client, such as mIRC for pc's and ircle or snak for macs.

Make sure you type the # in front of the name of the room. Other than that, I don't know what the problem is - the room's name is just #thescienceforum.
To me it was still a little strange how you guys approach such issues.
But, I realize I only have to create the room, when I was first to join. Right?

I'm not an expert on irc stuff but I don't think you "create" a room. The room exists on the server and you simply join it. I have often joined the room and been the only one there. Perhaps it was something about the specifics of Chatzilla? Also, increasing text size will be something you do in the Chatzilla options.
I'm really lazy right now, but try to type #gdggdgdfgdgdggfdfgf and see what's gonna happen.
This room will exist when you click the Join button. : )

Well, I know I am dim, but I cannot get this feature to work. Basically (why do people say this?) I just get a blank sub-screen with no buttons, and no "right-click" option.
I DO have Java installed, so what else must I do?
Or is it not worth the effort?
When you're on Firefox, you need to enable Java under Tools>Options>Content.
Don't know, might be this is it. ^^
