I use IRC chat clients all the time, but for some reason it just won't connect. I tried connecting to the server from an external client (outside of the forum website) but it said that access to #tsf and #thescienceforum was blocked.

    Help me out?

I'm pretty sure my firewall doesn't block it ^_^

    EDIT: Fixed it! !

Maybe if we had a sceduled meet up, it would be easier to get people together on the live chat. I just signed on for the first time in a few months(at least) and there's noone around, as expected.

Maybe, if there are enough people with a couple spare hours every week or so, we could schedule a meet up, and decide a weekly topic or something

Hi, being on drummerforum.de we make use of a chat software available at https://blueimp.net/.

Could be this was an alternative to implement here as well?

Have you guys heard of this software already? To me, it seems to be working pretty good, all the time I log on.

People were for a while on a regular basis, the problem is once a few people loose interest everyone else does as well. I guess it will go in cycles.

I still think organizing events might help. Like a monthly or weekly live discussion with predetermined topics, which are mostly just an excuse to gather and something to fill up time.

Hmm... this is interesting. I like the idea of this.

Perhaps we could schedule a topic of discussion and date/time. Then one of us could post a transcript of the chat to a thread for archival purposes. The purpose of the thread would be to entice others to participate in the chat, either through scheduled "conferences" or ad hoc discussions.

If we schedule a discussion, there are a couple of things we would need to decide on. First, the date/time. We might need to review some stats and see when the peak hours are for visits by membership, but I'm guessing its not weekends. Mid-week evenings seem to have the highest visitation.

Second, we would need a topic. The topic should have to do with science, obviously, but one that is general enough to not exclude most. I doubt I'd be very into a topic of quantum mechanics, though I might enjoy lurking during portions. Still, I think if this sort of things takes off, niche topics like this would find good opportunity. But we should stay as general as possible for now. Likewise overly controversial topics might be fun, but could easily become overrun with flames and snark-shots from both sides -this might seriously detract from an inaugural "conference." For that reason, I recommend that we stay away from topics like evolution or religion, though I think this also might be an interesting way to go for future topics.

So, how about it? Given the above suggestions, establishing a general topic and discussion date/time, is there any interest? We could make ourselves as organized or formal as we like. For instance, we can set some rules regarding initial discussants / presenters followed by free discussion by participants. For the first 10-15 minutes, perhaps 1 or even a few presenters could outline an idea or topic -they could simply copy/paste text for us to review (a paragraph or two) along with relative links. Then the discussion could take off from there.

Or we could simply meet and have a topic of the day.

Or we could do both. We could institute a topic of the day for each day of the week, and still schedule independent "conferences" that are more date/time dependent and it would be these that we highlight in an archived thread.

We have a fairly diverse membership in knowledge, expertise and curiosity, so I think that the chat function could turn out to be one of our most under-appreciated features here at The Science Forum. If (In)Sanity isn't careful, we might double our membership!

Yes, I've not been able to use it for over a year now. My Java settings are up to date and nothing in the browser is blocking the signal. Not even my firewall.

It must be an admin problem by process of elimination. Either that or I am missing something.

I thought I had posted this before, but just in case:

Download and IRC chat program such as mIRC or Chatzilla (an add-on for Firefox) or any one of the many IRC chat programs out there. When you first open the program, it will prompt you to enter a nickname. Then once the chat window is open, type:

    /server irc.freenode.net

Wait for it to connect you. It may tell you to pick a different nickname if the one you started with is already taken. In that case type:

    /nick insertyournickhere

Once you are connected to freenode, type:

    /join #thescienceforum

And you will be in the room. The Java chat client is by far not the only way to get into that chat room.

I can log on fine with the button on the forum. Weird. Take paralith's advice though.

Sometimes people do, sometimes they don't. It appears to cycle based on how much this thread gets attention.

What could we do about this problem? Is there any way to get people more active in Live Chat? For starters, if you see me as online at the bottom of the website, just private message me to get on Live Chat. If i'm online, i'll also be logging into Live Chat. You may find some good discussions and I encourage individuals to start using it.

There was discussion about showing how many people are in live chat at the moment. Because some people use the web interface and some people use IRC direct it might be a bit of a challenge. It's also not our IRC server, so I'm not sure they would appreciate continuous automated queries to their server.

Well, I love chatting a lot. But the chat window popping up still stays white. I know, I probably need to install Java, which I won't.

Using IE an as well as a Java install draws a lot malware, viruses etc. which pretty soon will let my computer fail.

The FF IRC client was sporting an extraordinary small font that doesn't increase. However, my monitor sits a little unusual beside my bed, so that I don't see anything, due to a small font size.

That's what it was about with me. Often folks do move to javascript or an other scripting language to make things work in a web browser. Perhaps it will take a little more time to make the chat work for everyone.

    just chillin in the chat.

by the way as for the question just raised about how we could prompt increased use of the chat. it was suggested before and seems a very good idea that a meter be placed next to the chat button allowing all to see how many people are utilizing the chat. i believe there is a box at the bottom of the main page in which the members that are currently browsing the forum are listed, as well as the number of guests. perhaps a similar box for the chat could be installed.

edit* i have just observed that an easy way to get someone in the chat is to check said box for anyone interesting who's online and simply ask them to join the chat... just in case anyone gets stuck there alone.

LOL. I didnt even know live chat existed on this website and I was just about to post a thread suggesting that a "live chat" gets created. I believe this is probably one of the main reasons no1 uses it. If I didnt know it existed, how many others never noticed?

I'll join you, but we've lost the java applet on the forum. So it may be a little too difficult for the less tech savvy to get on.
