I have really noticed that the only two people to have a picture of themselves on this site are me and Tritai. Isn't that a bit weird? All the others seem to have pictures to do with science or stuff they like. Do you think it is just about the fact they don't want everyone knowing what they look like or do you think we have grown into a society that believes everyone is out to get them and so have to keep their id a secret?

Am i thinking too scientific here or am i partially or even wholly true?

I am my avatar, I prance around in a wolf's fur all day. I used to be the fastest hedgehog on the planet, I've been a floating robot and I've even been Jesus. Hell I used to be a spinning police box in the time vortex.

I'm not posting a pic of my devilishley handsome face on here, how would that look when I'm revealed to not be a bad wolf with 'Bad Wolf' above my head?

Marnix's avatar used to be a real fish, yet he's never changed it.... and well, time makes fools of us all.

What is real? How do you define real? If real is what you can feel (scales and bones), smell (rotten odours), taste (oh god no) and see (fish of the carribean), then 'real' is simply electrical signals interpreted by this server from another to arrage the binary to present the image of a pirate fish.

I don't think my face interests anybody on a science forum. Period.

Is that you? I can't pin your eyes to anything, you look so young and happy in your eyes. Yet they are hiding something.... As for Numii, I'm sure we'd all love to see your beautiful curves.

Nawwww, that's my great grandmother. Yeah, it's me. And yeah, my eyes are hiding something: hurt. My dad was yelling at me to look good in just ONE picture, so I tried for the final shot. There are actually other people in the original picture with me, but heh heh, I cut them out!

I am moving this to General discussion. No biggy, it just fits better over there. I'll leave a ghost so nobody gets lost.

Oh, my avatar will never have my picture in it. This forum is a form of escapism for me, so how can I do that if I have to expose my ugly mug all over it? 8)

Well the fact that I use my real name shoots that theory all to hell.

My avatar is Hikaru in my favorite anime, "Hikaru no Go" whose 76 episodes I have watched 6 or 7 times.

It is a matter of identity and how we think of ourselves. I don't spend a lot of time looking at myself in the mirror and so it has little to do with who I am in my own mind. In fact, occasionaly I look in the mirror and I am surprised how much of a stranger it is that I see. He he he... Any way our avatars in some ways represent us better than a picture could because we choose our avatar but our appearance is not really a matter of our choice as a person.

P.S. Yeah besides Tritai at least can dazzle us with that smile of hers.

DementisVir the main reason is that people have got used to with their own different types of avatars. So, they don't feel like changing it ^_^

I photograph poorly, that's why I don't use a photo as my avatar.

Also, is it really important? Image should be a minor part of our identities.

I used to have a picture of myself as my avatar all those years ago. I can't remember exactly what happened but I think I changed it and it started coming up as a missing link - haven’t had an avatar since, the pain of losing the old one was too much.

For anyone interested, Im in the centre.

No I come from Derbyshire, I like to go to skeg vegas when I can though ^_^. I'll drop by next time on my way there... :P

I'll tell you a funny story. When I was coming back off holiday from there I had not drove home from Skeg (it was my first drive long distance, aside from going there of course). So I kept following the signs for Lincoln and was following the landmarks I noticed on the way (yes I drove without a road map or plan (in 2 hours too lol). Anyway on the way back I followed the signs to Lincoln and when I got near I forgot to STOP following signs to get to Lincoln, hence getting into Lincoln... It was Friday, at 5:10pm exactly IN THE CITY CENTRE....

Nuff said, by the time we got out (which I had no clue where I was going we got out though) an hour had gone... Funny story, at least when I get to that roundabout next time I'll think... >_<

It was fun though, in a I'm sick of moronic drivers and the dead lock traffic not at all fun way.... ^_^

    Nah it was a laugh...

Yeah I removed it though as I thought some Idiot might ban me, I did not want to leave a picture here of me if that happened. In the Picture I clearly remember looking up and saying to myself "Oh God, please, not this Phuck*&g planet, find me one with intelligent life on it" - sadly the old man ignored me, must have called him an idiot, thus he has imprisoned me here. (Wanker).

It's always nice to see people in person - (even the ailens Megabrain) - if only to shatter the mental face that has been building over the last few years eh?

I agree, you can get trust and rapport just by knowing how people look. KALSTER, so your saying you don't have a beard? I'm thinking of growing one when I'm older, trying to go for that Gordon Freeman image for a while lol :P

At one time I did have a full beard and long hair, but not anymore. I have brown eyes, dark brown hair, 6'4" and Caucasian.

I always thoguht you were the opposite of caucasian, you know, black. Thats just me stereotyping and by no means do I intend black to be racist. God I hate all this political correctness crap. There are black, white, brown, yellow all sorts of colours, why can't we just describe people by their skin colour? It is after all the most obvious description to give someone to make a picture of them isn't it? Before going on about hair colour and other physical features.

Well, my avatar was of a black guy, so I can't fault you for thinking that.

I know what you mean. I actually changed white to caucasion before posting it for that same reason. It is nonsense and one of most frustrating issues around where I live. People are stupid, but the shining light is the next generation! Sure, racism and prejudice are still being passed on, but increasingly the new generation is showing less of it. It is great to see!

You all build up mental pictures that easily?

If I concentrate really really hard, I can manage a fuzzy outline of generic human being :?

I'm glad to here it, I just wish the xenophobia over here in England would give over. I worked in a multi coloured enviroment and I over heard ALL the different ethnic people slandering other ethnic people. Particularly the Iraqis and that area, they hate the pakistanis but got on with caucasian more... It's a problem with all ethnics but I think its just fear thats all... but there is nothing to fear...

I actually clicked more with black african's than I did with caucasians and likewise!!!

Because some people think that the way that you look affects your morals and all. It's a conclusion-jumping thing. No one wants to affected like that because they might not be ATTRACTIVE enough.

How you look does effect your morals!

My pictures clearly display that I am a chubby homosexual, thus greedy and amoral.

Why is it that people are so scared to use their real name and location? LOL Why do you assume so much? Just because people don't give a flip about how people look or think it is worth the bother, doesn't mean they are scared of anything. Look, all you can assume of people here is that they have something like a computer and internet internet access and some capacity to communicate in English. How can you assume they have a digital camera (I don't) or a scanner (which I do have, but haven't used for years and haven't hooked up to the computer I work on), or a car (which I do not own), or a video camera (I don't)? Furthermore even if you have a picture on your computer, you have to get it on the web somehow in order to display it, especially if you have no desire to change your avitar. I cannot imagine why this would even be worth the bother.

Why is it so difficult to understand that PEOPLE ARE DIFFERENT not only in what they have but in what they are interested in and that is all there is to it? Some are into words and communicate that way and others are into pictures. Now it is true that in my case, I am not very photogenic. It is rare that you will find a picture of me where my eyes are not closed because I anticipate the flash and close my eyes when people take a picture. But I did have my photo on my university web page but that page is finally gone.

We don't seem to be the most social group of people, it seems to be a trend with science forums.

Remember last time at 300? I celebrate every thousand now... ^_^ I calculated that by posting as much as I do, and in (equivanlent value as this post) I manage around 175 posts per week. Which means I become number one max poster in about 6 weeks.

Nah I'm good and have a good decent amount to say so etc. And er.... no 'you do seem to think to much about your own post count' comments either, I've heard them before and quite frankly I don't care about my post count. I just use the fact I have as trivia and also to point out that I, like Ophiolite and Megabrain, have far too much spare time...

I'll start hanging out in the chat room more often myself. Perhaps I'll see some of you there.

Oh, AM, I can't even begin to tell you how much better you made my day! I was just telling a friend about how I hated how I looked, and then I read your post, and you actually made me laugh (in a nice way).

Thank you, though. And no, I don't consider you a paedophile (ugh, I always feel nauseous whenever I think about them). And my pic is back.
