    Hello rest of the world.

I have a great passion for theatre; in spectating and in practicing. I'm planning on putting a show together soon but I can't shake this feeling that it's all been done before, if you know what I mean. I've been wondering if there's really any point to it all what with TV, Film, the Internet etc. I mean... what does theatre mean to you, if anything, in this day and age?

Oh, and any ideas for the show would be greatly appreciated lol

    I say Go For It!

Theatre is not the most viewed form of entertainment, but just think of Broadway! Millions of people still visit there every year to witness incredible dramas and theatrical performances.

If you've ever even been to the big apple, then you would know how many people attend every perfomance.

So, if you are willing to put a bunch of time and effort, then sure, go for it! Don't expect a huge turnout the first time, but keep up the effort and you'll do fine.

    Hope this helps you!

I attend the theater and the opera whenever I can. It's come to be viewed as a pretentious past-time, but equating theater to television is a great injustice.

The wonderful thing about theater is that you can come to see a new production of the same old play for the 20th time, and it will be different. You can analyze the choices made by the director, performers, and staging. While when a TV show or a movie is produced it remains the same indefinitely.

The last play I went to see was Closer, done at a black box theater, it wasn't anything special, but it's an experience of a completely different type from TV.

Anything that entertains the audience and makes them forget about they troubles would definitely be a hit.

If that is too shallow then maybe a piece that shows that in this difficult times around the world, we need to unite as humanity as one, no more boundaries, no more nationalities, no more who is greater, just human+unity = humanity hence peace and happiness for everyone.

    Hi Tree

Please try not to think that there is no point because 'It's all been done before'

Potential writers give up blossoming creativity and a promising career by believing that.

Of course it's been done before, but it's what you do with it and where you take it that matters and gives that original twist.

Take a look at Vladimir Propp who analysed folk tales and discovered recurrent narrative elements.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vladimir_Propp

These elements have not only formed the basis for folk tales but for many stories that we see on movie screens.

I mean look at the formula of - the hero fighting the villain who wants to take over the world, after much tussling and teasing that the baddie might win and all will be lost, right at the very end the hero is the winner and we can all live in peace again.

How many times has that been done? And it will continue to be done because it's a very successful formula which appeals to the masses psyche's.

Another great book to get hold of regarding this is - The Seven Basic Plots by Christopher Booker.

Booker has managed to narrow down seven archetypal themes which recur throughout every kind of story telling. He demonstrates this by using many examples from myths, novels, plays, movies to soap operas.

I am currently completing a Diploma in Creative Writing with the Open University with play writing as a module, and this book has proved invaluable to me throughout.

Theater is a wonderful medium through which to tell a story which involves the audience on a much more visual and participatory level than reading.

I certainly don't think the Theater and plays will ever die or go out of fashion because people enjoy them so much.

Whenever I go to my theater to watch a play it is packed out and often tickets sell out quickly.

So I shall look forward to perhaps one day watching and enjoying one of yours?

I agree with newnothing. If you can smoothly transition the audience from the terrible brunt of reality into a wondrous world of possibilities, you will definitely have a success. Living vicariously is the thing people love doing best!

It's been just under 3 weeks since I posted this here and I'd like to conclude the topic.

I DID put a show together and it was thanks to all your comments. I used the comments themselves for the show. You inadvertedly created the actual show =)
I actually asked the same question on 11 other internet forums. I gathered all of them together and then read them out as a piece of performance work at a showcase-like thing called 'Showroom' close to my University.

I had enough material for over an hour, but I only had 20 mins max so I had to go through the difficult process of cutting posts out; I'm sorry to those whos posts I didn't use. Many I cut out were brilliant replies, I've saved them all. (my biggest mistake in the show was forgetting to mention this, for which I apologise).

Like I said, this was a showcase, demonstrating new work. The performance was entirely non-profit. I am currently working on putting a show together that will tour small theatres in Cornwall this summer. If the other company members back the idea and we do it, then these comments will defiantly feature in the show if that is ok with the authors. If you want you can join our Facebook group. Just search for "Dave's House Theatre Company"

So here are the Youtube links for both parts of the recording I made. This forum comes up at 8.00 in part 2.
