    Hello,

I have recently started a website which has not show as much initial successful as I would have liked.

I am looking for people to review my website and tell me what I can do to improve it. The main problem is that people do not seem to want to make posts even though it is not necessary to sign up to do so.

I thought this forum would be a good place to ask as I can get scientific like evaluation and it would be reviewed by my target market.

The purpose of the site is to allow people to post ideas that help solve problems on any topic and uses voting to enumerate which ones are the best in any given category.

    The site is

    www.ideasieve.com

    Thank you for your suggestions!

Well, no offence but 1st thing that pops up in my mind is that
it's a "junk site". i.e. site that's been generated within a very short period of
time without thinking much about the design aspect of it.

I'd suggest making a MAJOR overhaul to your site, lift off all the just that's laying
there and make it more pleasing to the eye(less words on homepage(less complicated),
add nicer design to it, not the 1990-type of site that it looks now, drive relevent traffic and ure golden.

Also, I'd suggest residigning your site so people will know and see that
other people are active there, one thing to do is make sort of " latest comments/posts"
    feature on the homepage.

Btw, the opt-in box is useless, if you don't get people to even practipate in your site
how do you exept them to opt-in?
imo it just drives people away, so loose it for now; later when(if) your site is successful
return it with a nicer design.

    Hope that helps.

p.s. Remove pop ups, Adsese(for now(or at least think of a better srategic placing
so it won't get in the way)), change the color scheme(hospital cayan and green
really doesn't do it to me), make better header, change the navigation buttons
to make them more cooler... many things to be done.

imo, if you have real confidence in your site's general idea I'd suggest hiring
a proffessional web designer to make a complete redising for your site, they usually
go for a couple hundred bucks, if you can afford it, go for it.
You can hire people at eLance.com btw.

Thank you for your suggestions. I have been doing what I can to avoid that 'junk site' look but it is difficult, not from a coding standpoint but the simple things like what colors to use are a very hard part of web design for me.

I plan to do the modifications myself over time as kind of a hobby. Hopefully it will one day be an interesting site since most of the cool things I have planned will only be possible when the site has some volume.

Hm.. I've found this yesterday: http://www.wbdesignideas.com/
    And I really appreciate it.

Basically it's a cool blog type of website with many cool other
websites that feature there to give inspiration for web designers like you and me.

I'm kinda hooked to it now and looking for others like it, anyways. great stuff.

Another good "resource" is this forum: http://www.webdesignerforum.co.uk/
There you'll get much more proffessional advice than here, I can assure you.

Also once you have the desired design in your head(and on paper), just brake
your site to elements and google the photoshop tutorials for the desired effects,
and if you're planning to SEO your site, make sure that your site is SEO friendly(duh).

If you can't find something on google, just ask on the mentioned forum.

    Cheers! xD

Thank you for the links, I found some good ideas there that I put into my design.

I have been looking for good sites on web design but so far every one I have found so far has, itself, had terrible 1990 style design.

I have modified the design of the site quite a bit and I think I'm doing a little better now. I took off some of the adds and integrated the remaining ones better. The colors are also better now.. I'm going for the stainless steel like look.

Hehe, much better now, slowly getting the Web 2.0 feel to is xD
Still got some way to go tho xP

If you want to add some interest to yar site go to http://www.grungetextures.com

There are quite a few links there to diff sites that give very good tutorials/resources
    to the site.
Even if you're not into grungy look, check it out as you can utilize the techniques
that some of the links there teach.

Keep us posted on how your site goes, I for one am quite interested how this one
    turns out to be ^^

    Cheers!
    tony xD

p.s. although for Web 2.0 material you better off with the 1st link that I have you.
If you feel a little short on material just google "Web 2.0 design ideas" or something
like that and you'll get a buttload of material.

lol I need to stop thinking up website ideas...

I randomly got the idea for this site yesterday and threw it together in a day so I didint waste too much time on it...

Its a spell checker that allows you to post correctly spelled text and it misspells it for you

    Niiiiicceee!
I really liked the simplicity of the site, I tell ya; some sites are just too complicated
and they usually leave me craving for simple sites such as this.

I'd still change the header of the site for something simple but with more graphics
than it is now(don't overkill it and make your site look complex).

    All-in-all, this one's defenetly a keeper

p.s. To your previous site I'd suggest changing the logo to be a bit more glossy(to match the web 2.0 style)
    and tilt it a bit.

And also kick the hell out all the body of your site, and replace it with something
more graphically advanced and more simpler to the 1st time visitor.
You don't want to bombard your visitors with what is currently nonesence to them.
Make your homepage simple and let them know what your site's about.

And again, enrich your site with more graphics, it's kinda dull now...

could you elaborate on the "Make your homepage simple and let them know what your site's about." part. I understand what you are saying but i'm not sure what concepts I should focus on for the site without making it too complicated.

The idea of what the site is about has been churning in my head for quite a while now and its all so familiar and obvious to me. I guess I am asking: "What simple concepts should I focus on communicating to people on my home page?"

Just don't go into details on the homepage, which is the 1st page that
first time visitors see... Currently there is too much data there, data is bad,
people are lazy and as a new site(for them) you have only a few seconds to
let them know what your site's about and convince them to stay.

I - for one still don't quite know what your site's all about, the header picture does
give a rough idea, but it's too rough imo, give them a more clear picture.

And again, the body must go, replace it with something that has less details there,
and think of other things which you can put on your homepage(not deep site content related).

Well I have quite a few changes to the site since I first posted here. I thought I would bump the thread and let people take a second look at the site and give some new feedback. The design is not set in stone and will certainly change over time but I am sure I am doing better than I was.
