Did a practical experiment in class

we had a substance in a boiling tube and heated it in a water bath till all the solid had melted and continued heating to around 85-90 degrees. we then transferred the boiling tube to a beaker of cold water and recorded its temperature. every 30 seconds and plotted a graph of temp/time

my graph initially fell steeply but then levelled off at 54 degress approximately. i think this is my freezing temperature because it doesnt change temp when it changes state, but is this method incorrect, do i need to draw a tangent to the curve at any points or another method?

it also asked on any errors, in the experiment, i couldn't come p with any that effected when it would freeze so it must be a measurement thing.
any help would be great thanks
