What is main cause of the depletion of the ozone layer? Is there any solution?

The main cause I believe is the Earth's volcanic activity. The CFCs us humans create are a mere percentile of what that is but it, in my opinion, still attributes to the ozones depletion. There are theoretically ways to fix it but these ways could prove disasterous by side effects.

CFCs are a major contributing factor because in the lower atmosphere they're non-reactive and so don't wash out over time (or at least very slowly)

once they drift to the upper atmosphere UV light breaks down the CFCs and creates free Cl which then reacts with O3 to form O2 and ClO

the latter then splits up under the influence of UV light, the free O recombines to form O2 and the free Cl is ready to destroy more O3 molecules

that's why CFCs do damage to the ozone layer beyond what you would expect from their relatively low concentrations : mostly unreactive at lower latitudes and highly reactive + repeatedly so at higher altitudes

don't know how volcanoes are supposed to contribute, unless there are volcanoes that spew out substantial amounts of Cl and inject these as far as the stratosphere

i heard that hfc is less harmful than cfc, because it doesnt contain chlorine or bromine neither so it wont gives free radical chlorine or bromine that will destroy the O3(ozone). but it's still greenhouse gases that cause global warming. do you know something that can be used as refrigerant but safe and not harmful to the environment?

HFC's are less harmful 'cause they're less persistent in the atmosfere. They react in the troposfere (the hidrogen(s) atom(s) in the molecule can be easily removed by a radical HO*) and so they cannot reach the upper atmosfere where the damage is done to the ozone layer.

Enforcement of no CFCs passed in the US by President Reagan (a huge environment triumph he doesn't get enough credit for) and other advanced nations went pretty far to mitigate the damage already.
