"A beef processing plant in Booneville, Arkansas, was destroyed as a fire broke out setting off a series of explosions Sunday afternoon.

The fire at the plant belonging to Cargill Meat Solutions, a unit of privately held agriculture giant Cargill Inc., didn’t cause any injuries. Possible leaks of ammonia gas and heavy smoke prompted authorities to temporarily evacuate parts of Booneville on Sunday. "

I was wondering why the plant would cause leaks of ammonia gas. Where are these ammonia gas from???~~~packing? material? reaction?

Meat packing plants use anhydrous ammonia as a refrigerant.

I worked in a meat packing plant is Schuyler NE. We had a leak once and they evacuated. Not because of a fire hazard so much as because the fumes. That stuff makes it very hard to breathe.

I wonder what they do with the meat. Can you sell smoke damaged meat or just say its smoked meat.
