Not sure if I want to ever mow the lawn again after these figures. That's just the US. Worse than the Exxon Valdez they say. Methinks when it comes to railing against the big polluters we are all hypocrites through ignorance.

All that belongs to human understanding, in this deep ignorance and obscurity, is to be skeptical, or at least cautious; and not to admit of any hypothesis, whatsoever; much less, of any which is supported by no appearance of probability...Hume

I believe I have been consistent in observing that big business and the oil industry do no more than supply Joe Public with what they want. So it is indeed hypocritical to drive gas guzzling cars and indulge in excessive air conditioning, while condemning them. (Not to mention where much of your pension investment goes.) Thus I reject the label of hypocrite in this matter for myself.

I'm willing to bet that there are significant adjustments in those figures between four, and two stroke, lawn equipment.
Anyhow, didn't tobacco companies say the same thing, "Hey, people are buying it"?
I was some of the mud that got to sit up and look around.
    Lucky me. Lucky mud.

A number of people in my city have been switching from cultivated lawn to wildflowers and mixed grasses or perennial gardens with shrubs while some have even replaced their lawn completely with raised veggie garden beds. A much better use of space, energy and natural resources, in my opinion and I am thankful that our city governance recognizes and permits these uses. I understand that in some jurisdictions one has no such options and is expected to maintain their lawn to neighborhood standards.

    Horrors!

Only wild grasses and volunteer plants grown on this property and the horses are only to happy to assist in their management.

I have an electric. Which is to say, my lawn mower is coal-powered.

All lawns need feeding in order to maintain vigour. When feeding, look out for signs of pest or disease and apply moss killer if required. Regular maintenance is the best way to approach a lawn.
