I think this lady is remarkable - quietly speaking her truth and wisdom. Enjoy.

What separates us from the chimpanzees

I have been in love with her since I read the National Geographic articles about her work with chimpanzees back in the 1960s.

And she is 80 years old today, 4th April. Happy birthday, Lady Jane.

This talk lured me to ted.. I remember watching this few moths ago and since than I can't stop watching TED from time to time..

But her point is that language is the main thing that separate us from chimpanzees .. would any of you like to say something more about this constatation?

i also have loved Jane Goodall. but the last book i read of hers "Reason for Hope: A Spiritual Journey" was disappointing for me. it was very heavy on religion. this is only my opinion. but i still admire her.

I personally think language is the only thing that separates us from any other species on this planet and even then its only our language - other species' have languages of their own. I agree with her that it is arrogant of humans to think they are somehow special and 'better', that our conscious awareness and supposed intelligence makes us a cut above all other species. Were we to be truly intelligent we would understand that those species who seemingly have lesser or differing abilities to our own need to be protected not taken advantage of.

I dont think our intelligence is all we make it out to be - we tend to judge other species by our own ability to understand them and that understanding has been shown time and again to be lacking.

To quote Bertrand Russell - 'The world is full of magical things patiently waiting for our wits to grow sharper'.

What is constatation by the way?

Agreed - but whatever her motivations, religious or otherwise she has proved to be a human we should be proud of.

I guess I can't really deny that Jane Goodall has done a lot of good work, even if her choice of specialist field is something I really, really despise.

Still, I suppose *someone* has to find those nasty creatures appealing.

Is it because they remind you so much of humans that you dont like them?
