It is illegal to improperly discard or throw away a used vehicular rubber tire. Presumably, the constituents of compounded rubber are environmentally hazardous. This I do not doubt.

My question is: Of the millions of tires whose treads are worn away on pavement annually, thus contributing rubber dust in large quantity to the environment, little concern has ever been voiced, to my knowledge. Given a 28" diameter tire whose 8" wide tread of assumed 3/8" depth is worn away, the volume of rubber entering the environment is about 430 cubic inches, this being, I believe, at least 10%, or more, of the volume of the entire tire, after roughly calculating remaining carcass dimensions.

It's quite a bit of added pollution, don't you think?
