This article on the Arctic News Blog, a blog based on the situation in the Arctic, documents what appears to be the worst case scenario of Global Warming should we fail to act and should the Arctic become Ice Free.

However... the meltpool on top of the Arctic ocean has been getting smaller every year and if we let the gulf stream get any further than it has to date then it will most likely continue all the way along the east Siberian coast, combine with the warm bering strait inflow, encircle the whole polar basin. Or at least most of it, if there is still enough multi-year sea-ice damming up against the west coast of the north Canadian archipelago to stop it getting to the extreme Canadian side of the arctic ocean.

The above is an extract from the site, for the full story go here:

I wish the blogger had taken the time to post a single research paper or model result to support his claims.

Funnily enough, there's a tiny, weeny glimmer of 'not quite as bad as we thought' in this Arctic Sea Ice post.
PIOMAS March 2013 - Arctic Sea Ice

Completely undercut by this one immediately preceding it The cracks of dawn - Arctic Sea Ice . Although this one has one of the great benefits of following the ice, fantastic imagery.

For data and statistical models, check out https://sites.google.com/site/arcticseaicegraphs/ - that's the daily set. There are also regional and long term pages as well as the webcams - useless at this time of the year, but fascinating when there is sunlight.

I thought I'd dump this scenario here seeing as this is also an absolute worst case scenario.

The penguins have already relocated themselves to Antarctica in preparation for the warming trends that started many years ago.

    and, here,
i had thought that having to tolerate just one more "global warming alarmist" was the worst possible scenario

For anyone insufficiently depressed by the foregoing, we have this additional downer about Antarctica - and penguins.
Stark exhibition of change at the bottom of the world

Expedition leader Michael Aw said the team witnessed an increase in gelatinous herbivores called salps possibly at the expense of phytoplankton, which are consumed by fish and krill.

''The balance in the herbivore elements of the food chain determines the types of larger animals that can be supported … there are suggestions it is changing from one that supports krill and its predators [seabirds, seals, whales] to one that may result in more fish and possibly squid,'' he said.

''We found a massive increase in salp instead of krill, which is bad news, a lot less nutritious. Penguins don't feed on salp at all. That's why a lot of penguin populations have declined. Mainly penguins will be affected first, but when the penguin goes that will affect the population of seals because they feed on the penguins.''

This is only a temporary stay, once they've finished their spaceships they'll just travel to a more habitable planet for cold-weather creatures.
