Welcome to GBBC — Great Backyard Bird Count

For those in North America, this weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count, a valuable event to track bird species. It's one of those citizen science things. If you are interested, check out the link above.

Warmer temperatures and lack of snow in parts of North America are setting the stage for what could be a most intriguing 15th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, coming up February 17-20.

Participants count birds at any location they wish for at least 15 minutes on one or more days of the count, then enter their tallies at www.birdcount.org. Anyone can participate in the free event, and no registration is required.

Dear ballyhoo. I was led to believe that the only Country with Great Back Yards was Australia. I have a great back yard. My residential block ( read site ) measures 50 feet by 130 feet, 50 foot street frontage. Yes, I am on friendly terms with my Backyard birds. Bye the bye, I thought all Americans lived in Apartments? All the film we see here in Australia, apart from Gene Autry films, and Doc Holiday ( my favourite ), would suggest that Apartment living is the go. Even Clint Eastwood may not have a backyard. westwind.

For my little patch of Scotch broom invaded grassland being converted to Gary Oak meadow the hard way, it's dark-eyed Junco, black-capped chickadee Steller's Jay, and a grey warbler I hope comes around again. I haven't' seen my red-tailed hawk who occasionally sits atop my big Douglas fir. Maybe I'll listen for owls tonight.
