is it possible to make a device from scratch that emits heat using the mains socket? few examples are soldering torch and a heater but i want to make my own. is it possible? and is it possible to control how much heat it gives out?

Sure, it can be done. Basically you would connect a resistor across the power supply and the power would be equal to the square of the voltage divided by the resistance. You could control the power level by varying the resistance or by connecting a transformer to vary the voltage. You would need to make sure the power can be dissipated without burning out your resitance element and you would have to make sure things are insulated to keep from shorting things out or electrocuting yourself.

What do you want to make, a soldering iron or a space heater? Why?

oh i just want to make a simple heater not for soldering or anything it can be anything like 1000-1500 degrees C and where do i get the resistor? and how much would it cost usually to buy one? and also the do i need to get a power supply or can i use the mains socket as a power supply?

You'll need to first know about safety and have a trained first aider standing by who can administer CPR whilst you are laying on the floor doing the "Electrical Break Dance" (well after he shuts off the 'juice' anyway)

Look up resistance wire on the net then use a bit of maths to design a former which can hold the coil and has a free air dissipation equal to the power you wish to add to global warming. If you do not do this things could start to get too hot. Start with more wire than you first calculate (this will always make things safer and let you stand further from your deathray machine) then if not enough heat is produced you can begin to shorten the wire until you either achieve nuclear fusion or recreate the big bang in your electrical utility/fuse box.
