    you mean someone is inventing the geiger counter? forgive my misunderstanding (maybe) but that is what it sounds like

    he says detecting AND identifying. can a geiger-mueller counter do that? not being sarcastic, don't know myself.

    No, it can't. It's just an ionization chamber that detects ionizing radiation regardless of the source.
