I have a brilliant idea to change how we power houses completely. Have you ever heard of U.S.B. ports? They are being used a lot as of late and can transmit data and power. For example, and iPod can be connected through U.S.B. to a computer and charge, it can also download songs from the computer. My idea involves changing electrical outlets in houses, to U.S.B. ports instead! Think about it, we could then, in the future, plug in our everyday utitlites such as a Blender, Vacuum Cleaner, Lights, etc to U.S.B. and supply power instead of outlets, it would also be safer! A computer could be housed somewhere in the house in a room and then you could plug in a monitor to a U.S.B. power port to access the computer, you could also connect MP3 players and other devices and not only power them but download information to them! The possibilites are endless, please inform me of your thoughts.

I'm not sure exactly how the cables work but, it sounds like a great idea to me. May want to look into how much power they can cary and so on.

Umm, this type of technology has been out for years. Ethernet over electrical outlets. They also have high speed (broadband) over power lines now.

That is CAT-5, not U.S.B, and do you see this in any home today, no. This would turn all outlets into U.S.B. plugs and would enable information and energy to travel from the outlet to any device.

You could have a central control center that controls all of your house appliances. You could vacuum without touching the vacuum. Your appliances could receive daily downloads.

Well it would have to be a larger version of a USB plug to handle the current. USB has 4 wires, two for data, two for DC power. +5 volts. Your talking about much higher voltages on the power side and in many countries AC power, also the length of the cable will impact the max speed. You also have to consider shielding the RF noise generated by the higher voltage traveling right next to the data wires.

Overall the concept is good, but not very practical. You can modulate data over existing standard outlets now and have a data jack right next to the power outlet. Granted the speed is not awesome.

I'm running all wireless, works great. The 802.11n version of wireless is something like 10x the speed of the existing stuff. I'm sitting right now typing this on a laptop over wireless. I still have just one small plug , and the option to unplug it and still work.

    You can call me Bob.

Like (In)Sanity was saying, i think you would have to modify them a bit and it is possible that a better technology will come along first.

Could you transfer energy with wireless? Current is the flow of electrons right? Could this flow be transfered into photon (electromagnetic) energy, like a laser. Then back into electron flow. AAAH I'm am going crazy.

Sure, using microwaves. Not a great idea

ha haa, nothing like getting some microwaves floating through your house.
