I have seen that you can make a more efficient circuit for a High Pressure Sodium bulb by adding a capacitor - do I need motor run or motor start or will either work?

dont do it, it may use less energy, but it also dims the lights

if u want to use less power, best to get smaller bulb

The capacitor in question is called a power factor correction capacitor..these are used in the ballast ...I would recommend you dont try this unless you know what you are doing....most newer HID's use these anyway.
