Hey guys im pretty new here. Im mark, from england !
Im not really a specialist when it comes to electro magnets , infact im far from it
I have been lurking on the forum a while , but decided i should register !

However what im planning on doing is making an electro magnet which is not overly large or heavy, but gets the job done with minimum fuss.

I've been looking at rockwelders magnets but not sure if even that would be powerful enough?

    What i need :

A magnet capable of pulling /lifting a penny ( i dont know if american coins are different to uk ones - but our 1pence and 2pence coins can be picked up by magnets ) from up to 10 inches away. It needs to be fairly concealable ( as its for a magic " trick " ).
The question is, can i create a portable E-magnet that will be strong enough to do the task?

If anyone fancies helping me out, i dont mind sending paypal donations - i really want to get this done !

    Many thanks
    Mark

This will not work on American pennies since they have no iron content. Even if pennies were iron, you would have a very hard time creating an electromagnet that is compact and could lift from 10" away. The amount of power required to do this would probably be very dangerous to have so close to your person.

    Hi thanks for the reply.
I was thinking of some sort of large capacitor to pulse the E-M, but as you say the current may be dangerous, however with a bit of work i'm sure i could make it as safe as other high power electronics ( think camera flash's etc ? )
I did originally think of using a camera flasher unit as a power source actually - but doubt its powerful enough?

When i say compact - even something that would fit into a small bag ( bum bag - i don't know the american term for those things... like a man handbag thing haha )

Oh and uk pennies 1p and 2p have ferrous composition ( not sure how much )

I would have to agree with Jammer. I don't think this is a safe project to use in a magic trick.

There is, however, a "lift" you can use on some coins to make the coin jump into your hand. Nothing required, just your hand. I can't remember the name of it, but look in magic manuals, it is a fairly common lift.

Actually, I've seen the lift used to propel coins from 6 inches to a foot away. It's all about muscle control over the hand muscles.

Look at youtube, I've seen it explained there before. It has something to do with hand or levitation, and has lift in the name. Oddly enough, I stumbled on it while watching a video that was posted here.
