Thread: question from a beginner

    First suppose I have absolutely no knowledge of basic electronics or even much knowledge in the area of basic science.

    Now please suggest what book I should get to start learning electronics based on that assumption.

    I have been reading around here and so far see "the art of electronics" suggested as a good book to read but is it as good for a complete novice? Is there anything I should read first or after?

    Thanks in advance, I want to eventually and hopefully soon understand half of what is written here

    What exactly do you want to do in electronics? build kits? design your own projects? equipment repair/servicing? a career of some sort?

    There are also many fields of Electronics. What ever you wish to do, mathematics is the key, the better your maths the eas it will be to pick up electronics. All electronics circuits can be modelled mathematically with great precision.

    Atomic theory, understanding the atom, (only as deep as electron theory) is also required for a good grasp. Basic semiconductor theory.
    Along with these almost any basic electronics book will help.

    None of the books I learnt from will still be in print, go to your public library and spend a day glancing through the electronics section to find books that you feel comfortable with.

    I just want to get better at it. I am not considering a career in it but I am fascinated by electronic gadgets and machines and I decided instead of reading some more fantasy books again I'd try learning about electronics.

    Most of all I want to build some myself, soldering myself, testing the gadget and finally using it for fun. So I guess electronic engineering?

    I realize I have to understand schematics and the flow of electrons inside out.

    But every one of the books I have covers schematics, ac/dc capacitors, diodes, resistors etc. I just wondered which one was considered the best for a beginner.

    As I said, All the books I have learnt from will be way out of print, if you can use a library do so, there are also online books you can download free, one of the better ways might be to buy 'kit electronics' and build them yourself, all books should be good, just thumb through them and if the maths is at your level then thw text will be. I can't go through your list but I do have an electronics engineers's refeerence book (2000+ pages) a dictionary of electronis terms then books on individual subjects such as microwave engineering, filter design, SMPS design etc for now though keep away from specific subject books (like the last three mentioned above). Stick to books with the words 'beginner, basic, starting with' and other titles obviously aimed at the novice. you could also join your local amatuer radio club and therefore mix with other electronics enthusiasts.

    sadly thats not possible without driving 30+ miles at a time. I live in GHOST TOWN missouri, population less than 100 haha.

    You can actually learn a whole lot off the internet these days. I would highly suggest using a spice simulator such as LTSpice (free) to help you explore what everything does without the expense of having to buy all the equipment needed to really get a look in to electronics. Theory is all nice, seeing something do what the theory tells you it should is priceless.

    Once you have read enough to get the basic concepts down I would jump in to a simulator program and start messing around. It's not like you can blow anything up. Just have lots of patience with everything, this is not a 5 minute learning curve. I've been working with electronics for 30+ years and I still learn something new everyday.
