While planners look at how to cut back the energy consumption of big cities, at the other end of the scale are shanty towns--organically evolved and self-built by millions of people in the developing world without a planner in sight. These shanties meet many of the ideals of eco city designers. They are high-density but low rise; and many of their inhabitants recycle waste materials from the wider city. Despit their sanitary and security failings, they have a social vibrancy and sound economical status that get lost in most planed urban environment.

    Would you tell me :

    1. What does vibrancy mean here?

    2. I am wondering what the bold part mean overall

As these shanty towns are surrounded by the rural agricultural land they show flexibility regarding supply and demand of food, clothing, generic materials.

They provide links and supply route towards bigger cities. There is chance that this potential of the small towns be harboured and people who venture get quick towards these small towns. There is less sophistication and more simplicity and less government / taxation procedures to follow. This creates atmosphere of vibrancy. It shows mainly level of potential and easiness of working environment for businessman.

Here is an attempt to paraphrase the sentence:

Although they are not very good as regards hygiene (ie not enough toilet facilities) and safety in the streets, they have a lot going on at the social level and a reliable economy ,which is not the case in most towns that are designed by architects and planners.

Vibrancy is like the opposite of dullness or when things are not interesting and nothing really happens.

Here perhaps it means "good health" The word itself is connected to the word "vibrate" . Sometimes people talk about a "buzz" and it can mean the same sort of thing.

It's a claim that planned urban environments tend to remove (or suppress) the "natural" spirit/ spontaneity of communities.

You can replace "gets lost " with "becomes missing" . Any help? (You are not imagining anyone "getting lost ..in some environment " ,are you?

    You understand "s
ound economical status " and "planned urban environments" ?

I don't understand .You say you understand all the separate parts of the sentence but not the overall meaning.

Why don't you say what you think it might mean ? - and I will say if I think you are right or wrong.
