1 %! Wow...that sounds quite tough. I'm not quite sure of the MIT standards but it is less than 10%, I think. Maybe someone else can verify.

    Hallo Mr Anand Satya,

I am an indian living for the last decade in Europe. I really pity the indian education standards. I have myself studied in top indian schools.

Here i wish to give a different opinion. In europe, they have top institutes like the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology - ETH Zurich, RWTH-Aachen, and TUDelft. I have also studied in one of these schools. There are top schools also in the US like MIT, stanford, etc. These schools take pride that they have several nobel award winners as alumni. Yet none of these top institutes go on "beating drums" like we indians do about our schools. Please tell me how many nobel winners has IIT and IIM produced ?

When i look at the number of research publications coming out of the IIT and IIM, as compared to other top schools worldwide, i feel really sorry. The number of publications are far far less. This only proves that our IIT and IIM is only a big hype. From this i can further conclude that the IIT and IIM are "top schools" purely based on "population estimates". Let me explain this. If there are 60 places in a class of mechanical engineering, and if 1 million candidates apply for these 60 places, what acceptance rate do you get ? Hey this is basic math !

This acceptance rate does not prove anything ! I agree that the students getting in are the best students. But then, whether these students get the expert and state of the art coaching is a big big question. From what i have studied in Europe, i am 100 sure, i could never study in IIT or IIM !! Being intelligent and being (technically) able to execute tasks in real life are two different issues. And i think, indian students lack the ability to execute tasks. Only studying in IIT or IIM does not help the situation.

To end my reply, i feel the IIT or the IIM is just another indian school with substandard facilities and education standards.

    With best regards

    KRM

Actually, IIT is ranked as the 41'st best university in the world, which is a very high ranking.

Here is an objective ranking of all the world's universities:

Nice list. For me its only a list with some numbers. Having myself studied in top schools (for bachelors, masters and PhD), and also interacted with people from low ranked schools, these rankings are really just numbers.

I repeat, IIT and IIM is very highly overrated. One of my friend is doing his PhD in IIT. After 4 years of research, not a single publication. But yes, he is VERY VERY intelligent. There are many many more people having similar problems...

I warn indian students against joining IIT or IIM. Go to the west. Faculty, facilities and research is world class.

At best, i could compare IIT and IIM to Lieden University in the Netherlands.

You have to take college ratings with a grain of salt. They all have different criteria in determining how good the college is, and you have to understand that many people think certain universities are so great because of their prestige. You can still get a great education if your university isn't at the top 10--it just takes common sense and contemplation to realize what university is right for you.
