This question may have been as previously but I could not find it. If the earth were to stop spinning while still orbiting the sun would objects fly off into space? I know that things would change dramatically due to the lack of spin but that is not the question. Thanks.

No but you'd hit that wall pretty hard with a speed of 1000*Cos(latitude) so at either pole - no immediate effect, at the equator --

Just how much of the earth and what is on it would you want to stop?

    Oceans? buildings, crust? etc

Assuming for a single moment it were possible, and you were the only loose object around, then you would instantly be propelled at the speed indicated above, (ie 1000 miles at the equator) some military planes (can) fly faster than this but they do not fly off.

If however the Earth broke up into large pieces it might fly apart but they would not escape each other.

Stop all spinning but it could be done over time such that going from roughly 1600 kph to 0 kph in itself would not be the significant factor.

Still would not fly off, you need to achieve a speed of 17,000 for a low orbit (200 miles above surface) so below that speed nothing takes off at the equator without assistance.

Put some more on you moron !
    Solomon Grundy
In 1944, this creature rose from the swamp, with tremendous strength and some dormant memories that for example allowed him to speak English, but not knowing what he was, and not remembering Cyrus Gold or his fate. Wandering throughout the swamp, he encountered two escaped criminals, killed them, and took their clothes. When they asked him his name, he simply muttered that he had been born on Monday. Reminded of an old nursery rhyme about a man born on Monday, the thugs named the creature "Solomon Grundy".
