I may have just grasped a concept in my study but id like to check my understanding if someone could help. Its about the difference between minerals and rocks. This is my understanding. Rocks are made up of one or more types of minerals. in the same way molecules are made of atoms.

    am i right

Simple but basically right. Rocks are formed by one or more mineral crystals, while minerals can not be formed from rock.

To expand on that, this means that minerals have a reasonably fixed elemental composition, whereas rocks can be highly varied.

You will notice I said reasonably fixed, since most minerals permit substitution of one element by another in their crystal structure.

Also, as Paleoichnium noted a rock may consist of only a single mineral. Examples would be very pure limestones (CaCo3) or anorthosite (palgioclase feldspar).

Thanks guys. Speaking of rocks. There's been an error this week with the Smithsonian Volcanoe report and the rss won't work either. Is there another way of getting it?
