EL NINO is establishing a pattern of weather conditions that will impact on the Southern Hemisphere. On the evidence of this weather Pattern Change it would be OK to assume that North America may not have a mild Winter, but a very severe one. Is there any onset evidence that this may be occurring?? westwind.

the old saying is that a dry summer is followed by a cold winter
and, we have had a very dry summer
    ............
by "severe" do you mean really cold? or snowy(wet)?

Dear sculptor. Hi. Hope you are well fed and keeping warm. No, I wouldn't expect to see heavy Snow falls. But just air temperature colder, night and day. Get the wood in, stop up the Windows with Chip board, inside and outside, and concentrate on replying to my Threads and Postes for the duration. westwind.

Cold, i am expecting, last winter was mild, and I still have about 5 cords of firewood from last autumns collecting------
I've been building a greenhouse/solar energy collector( solarium - Imgur ), and last year, just 2-3 weeks after the solstice, it got up tp 80 degrees f---26.6 c
blowing the warmed air down to the lowest part of the house(where the wood stove is) is something I ain't got done yet---but it's on the list---
still working on reshingling the house and shop roofs with steel shingles.
I left 2 faces, out of 11, of the roofs with the old shingles on-------and may just leave them till next year. when I get the stripped ones, currently with just tar paper, done, then I will look into getting more firewood, and routing and mounting a blower to send the solar-warmed air down to the lowest part of the house and shop, and let it rise to the rest. and, If the weather holds mild, maybe start the 2 untouched faces---?...
Meanwhile, well fed(slightly over weight actually), warm and comfortable, and we still have deer hunting season ahead, and maybe run the trot lines again and stock up on a bunch of catfish. I'm poor, I work hard, and I wouldn't trade my life for anyone else's. And, I still have time for this forum.

The trick, as always, is wanting what you already have.

Wow sculptor, what a great Poste. Always good to read what Friends are doing in their lives. Build and Construct while you are able. Believe me sculptor, thats a heart felt knowing. Keep the Brain in conceptual mode, ideas, practical ideas, and then application. To build your Life and Habitate, then your invirons, that is Mans mission. All the other frivolities are vanity and time wasting, and, in the end, not satisfying. As you say, be satisfied with your days work. Eat plenty of venison Hot Pies and Hot Custard over warm apple preserve. And I wish you well moving the warmed air from your greenhouse/solar energy collector to the house without too much thermal loss. All I have to offer these days are ideas sculptor, and although this one would require a special effort, it would certainly be long lasting and effective. Westwinds Idea. Quote "" Build a Bakers oven in the Shop or House. Fire bricks, second hand, special mortar, but when completed the heat source will be close at hand, burning wood and newspapers. Think of the cookies and Pizzas and Bread. You will be very popular. End Quote. westwind.

The current thinking on Northern Hemisphere winters (and summers for that matter) is that they're being affected more and more by slowing and amplification of Rossby waves Rossby wave - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia due to the reduced temperature difference between the tropics and the Arctic.

For this one you need either to spend a bit of time looking up the meanings of various meteorological terms or simply to let the language wash over and look at where the presentation is taking you.

Thanks adelady for top Quality Video references. Of course this is the Science (Physics) of the matter. They have engaged the observable Science, and by deduction and then calculation have arrived at certain plausible conclusions. I'm with them by way of explanation. So we shall see what evolves and I will maintain my interests right up until my Birthday, the 29 th of January, 2013. westwind.

That's correct. I doubt it will be as warm as last winter which shattered records, but hey, warmer means less expense for heating. Natural Gas prices continue to fall, and we'll have 2 cords for the woodstove.
And the obsevatory will save a lot, since that uses heating oil, so is like burning dollar bills.

The Northern US is much wider West to East than a typical upper air pattern (look up Rossby waves if really interested). If parts of the Northern States turn out to be much warmer (say the upper midwest) than average under a persistent ridge, then other parts will be relatively cold under a trough (say along each coast).
