I'll go on record to say I now believe there will be a colder than average spell of Weather in the US from Xmas this year to early May, 2013. The Science Forum might like to give Members access to a Prediction Forum where this type of Thread may be Posted. I base this statement on the fact that I believe cooler water( sub-surface), will be drawn up from the Southern Ocean along the Western Coast of South America to Central America, welling up towards the Aleuthan Chain of Islands and interacting with less saline waters coming down from the Artic Circle. At the same time I expect the less Saline Waters to cause disturbance in the North Atlantic bringing more on-shore colder air into Eastern Canada and North East America. westwind.

If the possible El Nino turns up on schedule, many parts of the USA will cool down - compared to the roasting they've been getting lately. Model Outlooks for El Niņo and La Niņa

However, an El Nino event will mean that Australia in particular and the world in general will get warmer.

As for ocean currents and temperatures? It's all about the Pacific. Climate Glossary - Southern Oscillation Index (SOI)

Thanks for Posting adelady. you rightly refer to the Principle Guidelines for weather forecasting in the medium to longterm systems that are used to predict likely future weather patterns. In Australia our coming Summer Season will, I think, be mild to warm, with hot days expected late February well into March. Not a lot of rain. And another cold Winter for 2013. In the case of the US I believe it will be cooler than normal through the beginning of 2013, causing problems from New York through to California. Well see. I'll be speculating a few dollars on a bountifull corn harvest late 2013 on the Futures Market. Got to get the Weather right. westwind.
