Im going to be doing an academic competition next year over earth science....i was wondering if anyone had some sort of outline so that i could organize what to read and get the handle of before i get the detailed reading material. I'd like to know how to organize the sub fields like tectonics, mineralogy, etc.

could you give us more details about the competition ? your explanation so far is rather vague, so it's not easy to know how to help you

Geology is both reductionist and emergent, and comprises more than one science such as physics, chemistry and biology - basically, you'll need to do a lot of parallel study to bring it all together.

I'd recommend starting with mineralogy. From there you can branch into rock classification schemes, or target the geochemical aspects of phase diagrams, thermodynamics, etc. The former will allow you to tackle igneous petrology, and associated sedimentary rocks (which will introduce you to processes of weathering and erosion in a number of enviroments: subaerial, marine, lacustrine, cryogenic, etc.), while the latter will afford you foundation into topics of metamorphism, alteration, metasomatism, etc. Coupled with that will be discussions on rheology and deformation, which is the entry point into structural geology. Finally, you can bring everything together with reading on tectonics, at which point you'll be able to specialize in time, space, and sub-field.

Marnixr- The competition is basically a 100 question standardized test where they ask about certain articles (that you've been given to read) in the field of earth science. I knew it had to do a lot with mineralogy and geology but wasnt sure what else it really encompassed.

bear- thanks, I appreciate it. Fortunately the field last year was Geology so that kind of transfers over. I've basically just been reading in geology since then too.
