I was reading today http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/20...rimate-origins about a possible discovery of the earliest of man's relatives. Not such a big deal until I found out this was not in Africa, but rather Asia!

Upon further investigation it was quickly determined that Libya was the place in which the remains were located. Wait a minute I thought to myself, isn't Libya IN AFRICA?

Isn't Egypt in Africa? It sure as heck is on the continental map of Africa.

Help me out here please as I am quickly losing my geographical perspective. Is it not true that some of the Middle Eastern countries are in fact located in Africa? When did we start referring to parts of the continent of Africa as Asia?

    Thanks,
    Null

The article says there have been no discoveries of related earlier fossils in Africa, while there is evidence for ancestors of these primates in Asia, leading to the proposal that the primates migrated from Asia to Africa. Nowhere does it suggest that Libya is in Asia. It refers to fossils found "in what is now Libya". 40 million years ago there may have been no geographic entity recognisable as present day Libya.

    Somewhat better written article here:

Ah, thank you for clarifying. I am still a bit confused about the origin of the primates but I realize this is the wrong part of the forum for that question.

I will ask in evolutionary biology.
