Where do you expect the water to go?

It is not actually a totally silly idea. We do it already. However, it is not so much the water going into a hole that is valuable. it is the dirt we dig out of the hole, which can create more land.
Pretty much every port city on the planet has a harbour that has been dredged, with dredgings used to reclaim land. This, on a very small scale, is what the OP is about.
