I was recently reading an article about the element Ununoctium when I came across an article talking about an theorized Island of Stability when it comes to these heavy elements. Basically what the theory says is that elements keep getting more and more unstable until they reach a point of Stability where they start becoming stable again. Information on this can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Island_of_stability

There has also been some scientific evidence to back this theory up: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/04/07/sc...07element.html

So my question is this. Lets say this is true, and there is an Island of Stability. And lets also say that we humans manufactured a new element say Element 125 or so and it fit with these rules and had a half life similar to Plutonium. Would we be able to get any more energy out of it than we do Plutonium. Would these New Elements be a good source of Energy and power for us or would they be pretty much useless?

i must say i have my doubts
the main reason for this is that as the size of the nucleus increases, the distance over which the strong nuclear force can operate is exceeded
this means that, as the nucleus increases in size, the repulsive force between the protons in the nucleus starts to get the upper hand over the strong nuclear force, something that would appear to become ever more pronounced with an increase in the atomic number

The old principle known as thermodynamics applies. The first law says : "You caint win!" The second law says : "You caint even break even!" And the third law says : "You caint even get out of the game!"

    Just joking.

However, those excellent principles show clearly that, if you put energy into synthesizing element 125, and you then obtain energy back from its decay, the energy returned will be less than the energy put in.

I mostly follow the science & scientific research forums, because it gives me lots of knowledge about new researches & developments in science, I found such a useful lab notebook software for researchers & developers.
