I've moved to Australia from Europe and was very surprised about the amount of ants here. Their small mounds of sand can be seen everywhere. So I started to wonder how many tonnes of sand and earth would the entire Australian population of ants move per year? Any guesses or ideas how to get an approximate value?

your question really breaks down into 3 subquestions : how many ants nest are there in Oz, what is there size spread, and how much soil gets moved depending on the size of ants nest ?

tbh, i haven't an inkling as to the answer to any of them

pity Darwin decided to study worms rather than ants

I was thinking an easy approach may be to have a metropolitan ant density and a rural ant density per square meter/kilometer. If we then knew approxiately how much an ant moved in a day it could be calculated to a decent approximate for the whole country.

except there's no such thing as your average ant - in Australia alone there's 975 species of ant, and if the rest of the world is anything to go by, their individual sizes could range from practically invisible to about an inch long

likewise ants nest may range from a few dozen to several millions of individual ants

good luck trying to make an estimate based on your "average" ant or ants nest
