I'm posting a few websites which have links to a variety of video clips demonstrating the powerful affects of a tsunami. The first and second links take you to the NOAA website for an illustration of how the wave propagated out from the epicenter. Keep in mind that the area initially affected by the quake was several hundred kilometers in length. The third link has technical information pertaining to the 9.0 quake, with links you may find instructional regarding aftershocks in the region. Browse through the links to find seismogram displays of the 9.0 earthquake as registered on the opposite side of the earth (check out the Blacksburg, VA USNSN reading for 12/26).

From what I understand several land masses may have actually shifted position several meters as a result of the quake. I wonder who will get hit next.

On reflection, the magnitude of the loss of life in this disaster can be partly attributed to a lack of knowledge and understanding of such forces on the part of the victims and their governments. They were ill prepared to know what would happen in the event of an earthquake. Consider the steps Japan has taken to mitigate earthquake and tsunami damage.

I think if you look at the US you'll find the same scenario for the most part, the exception being areas around Alaska. It appears countries plan for what they have faced countless times and disregard those things they have not. So your right, many lives could have been saved if there was better understanding of the potential.

Is there a bomb large enough that could create a wave like the one that was created by the resent earthquake?

    Welcome to the forum,

I'm no expert, but somehow I seriously doubt it. I would say a comet smashing into the earth or a large asteroid would do the trick and perhaps far more. We have a couple people on the forum that appear to understand the mass/energy transfer much better then I do.
