Can somebody explain how water is pumped from mine shafts.Atmospheric pressure can only support water to approx 10mtrs so beyond this depth how do the pumping systems work?

The limit of one atmosphere applies to the suction side of a pump. There's no such limit on the discharge side so if you put the pump in the bottom of the shaft the discharge head is only limited by the particular pump design and the power of the motor.

Many thanks Bunbury the solution seems obvious after your explanation and I suppose in very deep mines where the pressures and power required would be very high that perhaps they use relay pumps at regular intervals of depth.

There are pumps available than could pump from a mile or more below the surface, but I don'r know if that's what they use in practice, not being a mining engineer. The method you describe would require less sophisticated pumps, and is certainly an option.

And this atmospheric theory to my best of knowledge is applicable only to centrifugal pumps only.

If you mean the limitation on the height of the pump suction, that would apply to a positive displacement pump as well.
