Thread: Computer doesn't beep, monitor stays blank

I have a computer which I assembled recently from assorted parts, namely:

Gigabyte GA-P31-DS3L Motherboard
Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz
Inno3D Nvidia GeForce 7300 256MB PCI-E Graphics Card
EZCool 500W PSU
1x Crucial 1GB DDR2 Ram

When I turn it on, the monitor stays on power saving mode (as if the computer were off), there are no beeps, and the keyboard lights do not flash, however the fans on the case, the CPU and the graphics card spin and the mouse lights up (it is optical).

I have tested the monitor and the graphics card in another machine and both work. I have tried re-seating the ram, the graphics card and the CPU. I have tried resetting the BIOS, although it never showed up in the first place as the monitor never showed anything. I have tried plugging in headphones in case the beep will sound through them. No luck.

Does anyone have any idea what would be wrong with it? I really hope it isn't the mobo as I paid a fair bit of money for it and it's quite new.

If there are no audible beeps when you switch it on then the BIOS isn't starting and conducting the POST. Try disconnecting the CD drive data cable (not the power cable) before turning the machine on. If, with power on the tray can be opened then that is often evidence of a bad board, cpu or both. Ok, the tray can be opened. Is there now a test I can use to determine if it is the CPU or the board which is the problem?

If you are getting no beeps whatsover, it is the MB. You can obviously swap out the MB, or try another CPU to confirm (there is no other simple way, sorry).

Oh, well, I suppose I'll have to send the motherboard off for repair.
