    Dear All:

I'm finishing my M.S., and the question about taking Ph.D. study is arising. I've been doing research in the field of theoretical computer science, so for me two ways are available: to be programmer or to get Ph.D study. I like both programming and computer science, but I don't know about working conditions in both of them. The key factor for me is a free time: I hate to be prisoner of my job, when job captures me, when it makes me spend evenings and nights by doing work. Money isn't so sufficient for me as free time, I want to have time for my family for my main hobbies - outdoor and photography.

I have neither been programmer nor scientist, I would be thankful to hear anyone's thoughts about the situation.

    Victor B.

    Hi Victor,
I am a software developer for a POS software company in Melbourne Australia.

I have found this company extremely flexible when it comes to work hours, salary and the like.

For example I will rarely be in the office prior to 10:30am - 11am and that poses no problems for our company; but at the same time I have found that you are constantly trying to keep up with the latest technology or working on a project so it does eat into your personal time.

What it really comes down to is, do you really love I.T.? If so you will enjoy the work, if not it will be a drag, but to be honest with you mate it seems a little silly that you are only starting to ask these questions now....

Hi. I've been programming as a hobby for over 30 years. You have to love the challenge, as it really eats up the hours. Choose whatever you will be happy doing for the next 35 years, and choose carefully!

    Good luck.
