I am inbroiled in an internet war with some moderator from another forum, he has my IP address etc. and is threatening to release my personal info...what can I do to possibly rebut this like get his IP address or etc? I have already called the proper authorities and I suspect he may get some "legal" consultations soon enough, but still what can I do to possibly scare him?

Have you tried giving in to his terms? Offer to leave the site if his terms are unreasonable. Certainly the threat he made is unethical, but there comes a time when standing by principles when the rewards arn't substantial is simply a bad decision... particularly when the risk is having your personal info released.

I'd offer to leave, then press the issue with the site's host by reporting the abuse. Actually, I would stand my ground if all he had was my IP and real name. Anyone can get that with a little effort. I link to it here and at sciforums several times.

Yes I have written that I would leave the forum, he can delete all my posts, etc. I don't want problems...but that's not enough for me. Assuming he does do the stupidity then I want to have a back up personally to show him two can indeed tango.

He has my IP and something else with my service provider...I don't know if he has my name or not. I called the ppl at my service provider and they said since I have a firewall much of his talk is just hubris I am not sure if that is true...I hope so.

I wouldn't worry too much... there's not a lot he can do with your IP if you have a good (or even a bad) firewall. The best he could probably manage is to figure out who your ISP is and deduce what part of the world you live in... not exactly rocket science, but not a lot he can do with it.

That's not to say there isn't some danger, but I suspect it is, as you say, hubris. He's all talk.

I wonder about this too at times. I worry that some nut, with skills, will take offense at something I say (whether I deserve it or not) and fuck my little internet world up. I wish someone could either PM me or post here some things we could do to better defend ourselves. Don't currently have any problems, but who knows. Is there a certain book(s) that might be helpful to read or a particular web-site(s) to visit? Where are all the hackers?! :-D

Then try not to piss off people with what you say about them. Try to keep your conversations about the subject matter and not get personel with whoever it is you are disscussing it with.

I'm trying CT. I just like getting personal for some reason. Bad habit, I know, but one that is not easily overcome, for me.

You already know what your problem is now all you need do is correct that problem and you will find that you will have more friends and gain more acceptance of your views if you do. It will take time but if you are willing to keep trying to correct yourself in awhile you'll be just fine, just don't stop trying to not get personell about whatever you are disscussing. :-D

With a bit of social engineering (or researching your name or ip) he could find out where you live, he could use your ip to try and gain access to your computer or router (if you don't have a router with a firewall, make sure to disable your windows shares because those make you extremely vulnerable to attack). If he finds out what your ISP is he could contact them and attempt to convince (fake) them that you are involved in to certain illegal activities that would put your ISP in danger, and as a result your ISP may close your account with them or cause other trouble on your account. These are just a few examples of what one could do with an IP address...

If you want, you could PM me your details that you think he may have, and I could run them trough and see if you are vulnerable to attack. You can also send me his details and I can run them trough to see what I can find out...
