My old Verizon provided Westell DSL modem is dying. It used to be okay, but now every 20 seconds or so while I'm on the internet the page freezes for about 3 seconds then jumps to where it loaded. So, I could be typing, then all of a sudden everything would freeze while I continued to type, then 3 seconds later, what I typed would suddenly appear instantly. Not only that, but the most that it downloads at is 30 KBS a second...on good days. I know a few people who are using Netgear modems with the exact same internet service as me, that get 200 KBS a second connections no matter what.

Which DSL modem do you suggest that is reasonably priced?

I was looking at these NetGear modems:

I don't think that's your modem. Have you tried running something like AdAware and then rebooting your computer?

I've heard many times throughout the internet about people complaining about their modems screwing up after a while.

I just downloaded AD-Aware and am running a full scan right now.

DSL modem speeds are dependant on the quality of the copper in your phone line, which can differ a lot throughout a city. Also, when you have a slow computer (slow processor, small and slow RAM) and you install programs that came out recently, you will have similar problems to the ones you have now. You might also have installed an instant search toolbar for your hard drive. This program monitors everything you do on your computer and can seriously slow it down (comes with some program install discs as an extra)

Instant search toolbar? Where would I go on my computer to uninstall that?

My Appartment is pretty old, and I don't feel as if they upgraded any of the wires since it was built.

Add/remove sofware in control panel. If you have it installed, you should be able to see it on the bottom right taskbar.

Try taking your modem to a friend, and try downloading something from HIS computer, but making sure first that he can download normally. If you can download normally from that then you eliminate the problem to your PC. If the problem persists, this means it comes from the modem. Which you would want to get fixed (if possible) or get a new one. Also see if the modem has a warranty. If it does, call the company which made it and ask them if it can be fixed, and if they could fix it as part of the warranty.
