    Yo dudes,

I'm trying to make a forum but I have little computer and comp. programming experience. I would like it to be structured like this one. Can I get any tips. I don't really know where to start on this.

    Arigatou..

as far as i'm aware setting up a forum is simply a matter of getting yourself some forum software and setting it up

depending on the conditions you can get it for free or for a small fee

Philosophorum uses Simple Machines Forum, and as far as i'm aware, it's only being paid for because it doesn't carry adverts

or you could ask scpg02 - i think her Corner Cafe is a free one, provided you put up with the adverts

So I've downloaded the phpbb stuff which I believe this site is using. Seeing how it says "Powered by phpBB 2.0.13 © 2001, 2002 phpBB Group" at the bottom of the page.

I don't really know how to use it yet but I guess what I need to find now is a web hoting service that will allow a forum.

Does anyone know of a cheap web hosting site that allows forum use?

hmmm... well I'm trying it. I don't like how you have to have their website address included in your own though.

Build your own linux server!!! that way, as long as you have a nice ISP that allows the bandwidth, your server is YOURS and you can host anything without trying to find some company that charges the earth for the privalege...

However, this may not be realistic for what you intend to do with it!

I have used webwiz forums before, it runs on an MSAccess database, or a SQL database, and it's free if you put up with the adverts, like most freebies (no such thing as a free lunch lol) also, I fear it won;t run on a Linux server.

    Good look

Yeah, I thought about that but I think I have a lot of learning to do before that happens.

For now I'm going to use Blue Domino. I also want to make a couple web pages along with the forum.

    Thanks anyways for the advice.

    P.S.
My website will hopefully be up in a week or so and I can post the link here if anyone wants to check it out. I think it's pretty basic.

Dude, Coldfusion, I got here first and your name is too similar to mine. At least add a few numbers to your name.

If you are willing to have your forum for a lifetime, maybe you could consider the option of paying a very small sum of money for a year of hosting and a VERY cheap domain name ($5 for one year). Check out my signature. Epsilon allows all file formats, great support through live chat or phone and even has site builder for people who don't know how to program a website.

Don't go with phpBB 2... phpBB 3 RC 8 has just been released. The full version of 3 won't be far off. Rather set up with the release candidate. By the time your forums running and fully functional, you should already be able to upgrade to the full release.

Alternatively, you could try DRUPAL, which is my personal favourite. It does, however, require programming knowledge. But really worth looking at if you want a professional solution.
