im about to go to college this fall and i have been thinking of majoring in computer science. many people have told me that this is not a good field to go into because u have to constantly learn new stuff and that in the near future companies will be giving the jobs to people in india because they'll do the same work for less money. Also i've heard that its a lot of work and its really boring. What are your thoughts on this? do u agree that it is true what i've heard??

I just saw a report of the best jobs in America and computer programmer was #1 on the list, with increasing security concerns. More companies are housing their own programmers than ever before, according to the report.
Take it for what it's worth.

CS is absolutely not a field to enter into unless you actually like the work that it entails. Do you like solving logic problems, programming and doing math? If not, you're probably not going to like most of the jobs for which a CS degree prepares you. Those who enter the field simply as a career to make money typically quit within a year or two. There are many other areas that you can make money that are much easier, and even more stable over the longterm.

Some obvious examples are accounting, finance, and nursing. All of these pay well. These degrees are very easy to get; a CS degree is much more intellectually rigorous and demands a strong work ethic; the failure rate is often 50% during the freshman year.

Alot of people a have big misunderstanding what computer science is, they generally think of I.T or some sort of 'phone in technician. This is not the case...

Have a look at the pay for programmers(espech senior). Also, computer science covers a very large area and the jobs avalible to you after are huge in number. You can be writing software for practically anything from iPods to space robots, research into A.I, quantum computing etc., systems analysist, networks, games, databases... I could keep listing areas.. but i hope u get the point.

Another thing, the computing industry is currently under-manned so your very likely to get a good job.

Wether or not its boring is down to the individual if you have an intrest in computer science... its not going to be boring, granted however that ther will still most likely be areas u dont like. In my case its databases, im all for the theory, reasearch, A.I and programming. Hope iv helped.
