i have got Linux and Windows XP on my system ....i use VMWARE also
so now my Question is, does any one of these Operating systems know the existence of the other one.........Please explain me in detail........

I suspect that Linux will know the existance of Windows, and you will be able to view it's file system from within Linux, but Windows is far too 'antilinux' (so to speak) to care about the existance of Linux.
You'll probably find that windows can see a file system (Linux) but will not, without a third party software, be able to read from it, and will probably say it is unreadable, or unmounted or something similar.
I have Ubuntu Linux installed on a flash drive, and I can open all my Windows files, stored in the Windows file system from within that.
Windows however, will not talk to that flash drive, not that it matters, because all my data is on a seperate partition on the primary disk drive.

That flash drive thing sounds pretty cool. I'm surprised it has enough memory to hold an OS.
Installing onto a flash drive (mine is 4gb) is easy enough. You just have to be careful about what it wants to do with the primary hard drive (Linux Speak: /hd0) a flash drive will probably be /dev0. I didn't let the installer change the bootloader, I kept it on the flash drive and I just tell my bios to boot from it.
Running an OS off a flash drive is pretty cool, it just doesn't seem to be fast enough. Everything seems to take forever while data goed into main memory, so you would be far better off installing to a secndary hard drive or partition.
or an external hard drive. Then you can still carry it around... hmmm, what use would I have carrying around a hard drive? Well it sounds cool anyways.
lol, I've never had much success with Os's on external HDD's, never tried seriously though. they are however very cool!!! 8)
I have a WD My book pro 500GB which I struggle to see how I'll ever fill up! I mainly use this when I'm recording Video's in digital format, or when I'm recording my music into Cubase. I can't see how hard it would be to install an OS on it though... make sure the BIOS can boot from an external, or use a third party bootloader.

I am very sure that Windows will always assume that it is the only OS installed on the machine. But you can always dual boot... It is relatively easy to do, even each time manually. But more convenient to install something such as LILO which handles dual booting and asks you by default each time which OS you wish to boot.
