My best friend, is also a computer guy, but he's a programmer and makes real money....so for the 8 years I've known him, he's ALWAYS had a faster computer than me....until now. (Yes...you are detecting "processor envy") With my new job, I have access to parts...cheap. I've got a "corvette" right now...not quite a ferrari...but it's pretty fast.

We were using a simple program from Passmark to test performance.

    http://www.passmark.com/download/pt_download.htm

My highest score was 673...his was 575.

What Mac has "under the hood"

    Amd Athon 64 X2 dual core 3800, overclocked from 2ghz to 2.3ghz

    (2) 512Mb DDR2 667mhz (soon to be upgraded to 2gb/800mhz)

Nvidia 6800 256Mb PCI express X16 Video card overlocked from 325Mhz core to 450, and vid memory from 525Mhz to 700. (weak link...a 512Mb card came through work yesterday..but another employee grabbed it before me...this will be upgraded soon)

    (2) Seagate Cheetah 15k RPM Ultra Scsi 320 33.7 Gb server hard drives, hardware striped Raid 0 on an Adaptec 2100 Scsi 160 128Mb Cache PCI controller. (sweetness)

    250 Gb & 160 Gb Sata150 7200 rpm hardware Raid 0.

    Bouncing balls = ~1360 fps
    Low Res Jet = ~300fps
    High Res Jet = ~39fps

    What can you score?

    AMILO Xa 1526,

    AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-56 1.8ghz
    2Gb DDR2 533mhz
    NVidia Geforce Go 7600 256mb 525mhz-gpu 475mhz-mem
    1xFujitsu Siemens 5200rpm sata II 160gb
    1xHitachi 7200rpm sata II 60gb

    --------------

    My Score........ :x 399.7

I don't think thats bad for a laptop, if i had a rock or alienware i may have been able to come closer, but it can run doom3 at 1024 x 768 in ultra quality so im happy.

    Nice program BTW.

Is there a program like this that will calculate a score for a mac? obviously there's not much point as macs are pretty un-customizable but i was just wondering as all the downloads say windows and i can't be bothered to restart onto my windows partition. (ultra-lazy)

Not that I know of Hazz. Since Mac's are not really used for gaming,(....resisting.....joke....about.....patcho uli wearing treehuggers using photoshop to make protest signs....j/k) and as you said, aren't very customizable, or overclockable (is that a word?) there's really not much need for it. There might be something out there, but I don't know any off-hand.

    Another great program is:

3dMark06...this one will bring your system to it's knees. It tests the HAIL out of your vid card.

Edit: Since were on the subject of drag racing....here in the states, drag races are a quarter of a mile long. I was wondering...what the standard length of races in countries that use the metric system?

The hand of time rested on the half-hour mark, and all along that old front line of the English there came a whistling and a crying. The men of the first wave climbed up the parapets, in tumult, darkness, and the presence of death, and having done with all pleasant things, advanced across No Man's Land to begin the Battle of the Somme. - Poet John Masefield.
