The potential dangers of AI are very significant (1,2). There are numerous areas where it could cause serious, even catastrophic problems for its inventors, and all the hapless people subjected to its activities.
Quoting from (1) :
"Stephen Hawking said in 2014 that "Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history. Unfortunately, it might also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks." Hawking believed that in the coming decades, AI could offer "incalculable benefits and risks" such as "technology outsmarting financial markets, out-inventing human researchers, out-manipulating human leaders, and developing weapons we cannot even understand."

Yes of course there are all those movies which tell us that it could turn out nasty. In fact, it already is. Deepfakes are currently one of the major problems with AI, and such activities could lead to extreme events, such as global war. Hawking's warning might very well be prophetic. We are developing this new technology with no guardrails, in an ever-increasing world of hostilities.
