I've been having a terrible problems with windows hanging too often and even to long. What can be causing these hang ups? Usually its when I do something like click a button or link. How cna I speed it up? Why is it doing this?

I gotta tell ya, the time delay is quite unnerving.

    Standard things to try:

    1) Run chkdsk to see if your hard drive is healthy. You may also want to look at its SMART status to see if it's starting to go south on you.

    2) Defragment your hard drive.

    3) Look for malware. Malwarebytes is a good free tool for finding and fixing a lot. Eset online is another free tool that does a great job. The two together will find and fix most bits of malware out there.

    4) Disable unnecessary services.

    5) Reduce virtual memory to the minimum value consistent with running the programs you want. I actually turn mine all the way off.

I'm sure others will offer additional ideas.

I find that I have to reboot my computer periodically, or it gets incredibly slow for whatever reason.

Using Ccleaner can help speed up the process of tk421's suggestion above. Clean out the temp files and prefetch.
When my son's playing RoBlox- have to do this every hour or so or his game bogs way down.

First we need list of your components and what operating system you are running. You can get that by running a small, free program called CPU-Z. You can find that here: CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting.

I still find people running XP with 512MB RAM, which is not nearly enough. What then happens is that your RAM gets filled up quickly and then Windows has to run programs directly from the HDD, which is much slower than RAM. That is why RAM is needed in the first place, because a HDD is so slow.

I've had a problem with IE8 hanging when trying to load threads on this site, but ONLY on this site. I'm on quite a few other forums, but this is the only one where this happens. Sometimes, (usually) it just takes a very long time for the final sprite.png to load, but often the page just hangs, the blue progress bar at the bottem is full, but the page never paints, and IE8 stops responding.

I'm running XP service pack 3, with a gig of memory, and like I said, it ONLY happens here. (and I swear, it ALWAYS seems to happen with any thread that Forrest is posting in.)

Well, my first recommendation is to ditch the Windows OP of whatever flavour. Ubuntu (a Linux front end) is your Man (but don't go later than v.11.04 unless you want your PC to look like some crappy Android device).

If you insist on using Windows, first think about your browser - Firefox is free and far less troublesome than IE, and easily allows blocking of pop-ups

Next think about your home-page. I used to use Google as mine (under Firefox) but it used to hang every 2 or 3 tries. I now use bing as my home page under Firefox - it is lightening fast, it seamlessly imported my bookmarks sidebar, searches just as well as Google and, so far, has been "hang free".

But ultimately it is all a matter of taste I guess.

Undoubtedly there are better OS and browsers, but the point is, this is the ONLY site were I experience these loading delays.

Then it could be that this server is causing the problem by not uploading fast enough to your server. If this is the only place that have this kind of problem then it isn't your PC or OS it is here. Try to re apply to this fotum by using another name and password just to see if that might help out, if not then I do not know what else you can do since the problem starts here.
