I suspect these: Programmable logic device - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Apart from using a ROM as a logic device and learning about PLDs at college (many decades ago), I have no experience of using them so I can't really add anything useful....

There are several classes of these. The older types were designed to reduce the number of "glue logic" chips by allowing the user to implement boolean functions that require up to, say, hundreds of gates.

In recent times, the FPGA (field-programmable gate array) has become popular. Companies like Xilinx make these, and allow the user to implement at will highly sophisticated digital systems of hundreds of millions of gates. You can reprogram them many times, so the user can iterate over and over again. They are an economical alternative to building a chip from scratch (which could cost you $100M), albeit at the cost of reduced performance and higher power than a full custom design.

A large user community has evolved around FPGAs. A vast repository of free code to implement a variety of functions on these devices is widely available.
