So when are we likely to see a 64 core processor chip on sale?
Um ... now: Processors | Tilera Corporation !
That's just the first example that came to mind, there are many more. Intel was working on a 80-core processor a few years back; not sure what became of it (can't remember the name now).
Thanks I checked that out, was actually wondering though when I could pop into PC world or Curry's and buy a new PC with a 64 core processor.
Ah, that might be a while away yet. Even Intel's 80-core architecture (the name is lurking around in my subconscious but won't come out!) was based on a special, simple processor (although I have a vague recollection it may have had an x86 instruction set).
The big problem will be making efficient use of such a beast without needing special software. GPUs already have hundreds [maybe thousands? I have been out of the business too long] of cores but either run dedicated rendering software or have to be programmed in a special purpose language (e.g. OpenCL).
When I hear somebody planning on buying a PC I’ll always recommend they build one instead, or find a friend that will help. It’s far cheaper and not as hard to do as you’d likely imagine. Especially if you’re on a tight budget.
Oh, unless your referring to laptops? I’m talking about desktop/tower PC’s which is easy. I'd prob go buy a laptop myself.
